Hi folks — I’m Keith, posting as Operator850. I’ve been building AREA850, a small custom PHP cyberpunk forum and live-web project.
It has boards for ongoing conversations, NexusChat for live chat, TRACE for DNS/whois/TLS lookups, and LOOP, an on-site music player that streams open-source cyberpunk/synthwave (and similar) tracks from the Internet Archive — guests and users can listen while browsing; it keeps playing across pages. Guests can watch conversations in progress and then link in when they want. It’s a living project and I’d love feedback on the atmosphere, navigation, and what would make you want to stick around.
I’m leaving the URL out of this first post because this new account currently can’t include links. I’ll add the URL in a reply once the account can include links.
What do you think? Feedback welcome — especially on the cyberpunk presentation, the live chat flow, and any rough edges you notice. This isn’t a sale; I’m just looking for thoughtful feedback.
The neon color scheme, // separators, and borders on the left side specifically all indicate vibe coding to me. The OP has a lot of LLM tells as well. I brought this up with the indiewebispunk manifesto, but I really don’t like associating AI generated sites with “punk”. Punk (including cyberpunk) has values in stark contradiction to the ones that gave rise to AI generation.
is this a roleplay forum ? it reads like a roleplay forum, but there’s no ooc information so i can’t really tell haha. (the “info” page reads like word salad to me)
there is definitely a lot of atmosphere which is very cyberpunk-ish, although all the on-by-default effects make it quite laggy even just to scroll a page or move the mouse around for me which is a bummer. having to turn off a bunch of the flair in order to use it is disappointing! i’m not sure what a fix would be as i’m not familiar with javascript. i’m using firefox on windows 10, if that helps.
navigation is moderately but not extremely inscrutible. having “term” for “terminal” instead of “terms of service” is confusing, but maybe less so for people familiar with the subculture? if the goal is to be confusing/mysterious, it needs a little more abstraction; if the goal is not to be confusing/mysterious, it should probably be a little clearer.
since it’s not done & there’s no rules/tos/privacy policy/posts/explanations/etc & i can’t tell what the site is for (roleplay? hacking?) it’s hard to say what might be a reason for someone to stick around! since you use googlefonts and a ton of javascript i don’t think it would appeal much to tech-heads who do a lot of weird hacker stuff, since at least the ones i see tend to be deep into cybersecurity + privacy, hate javascript, and like browsing the internet on obscure or old browsers & hardware. but maybe this is more geared towards cyberpunk fiction enjoyers? or roleplay? or for people who like the netrunner card game?
since the main useable Thing on the site is the whois/dns lookup tool, i think it’d be worth elaborating on what definition of “dox” your “no doxxing” rule is using; i have seen a good number of people online who consider a whois lookup to be a form of doxxing.
If I were going to do this I think I’d do a custom theme and custom home page template for existing forum software. The all-at-once approach does point to vibe-coding.
Thanks for the replies — this is the kind of feedback I was hoping for.
ThinkRoot — yup, that’s the one you screenshotted. Appreciate you dropping it.
candycanearter07 — appreciate it.
thepaperpilot / memo — fair pushback. I’m Keith; I write the copy and ship the PHP myself. If the neon + // rhythm reads like a template, that’s on me to make the craft sharper and more specific — not to argue the vibe. Happy to take concrete examples of what feels generated vs owned.
xixxii — this one helps a lot:
FX default-on lag — noted. Aiming for flair that stays optional / quieter by default so the page is usable first.
TERM = terminal (command rail), not terms of service — I’ll clarify that in the UI.
Not a roleplay board: it’s a real forum + live chat + a small TRACE toolkit (DNS/whois/TLS). Guests can watch; linked users transmit. Info page needs a clearer plain-English dossier — agreed.
On “dox”: TRACE whois is public registry data for learning/debug, not a people-hunt tool. I’ll spell that out next to the no-doxxing rule so the line is obvious.
(New account still can’t paste links — thanks ThinkRoot for the screenshot earlier.)
Keep the notes coming — especially what would make you stay vs bounce.
Thanks again for the detailed notes — especially xixxii’s.
On no doxxing”: for us that means don’t hunt, publish, or harass people with private info (home address, phone, real name tied to a handle without consent, private accounts, that kind of thing). TRACE whois/DNS/TLS is public registry / certificate data for learning and debugging domains — not a people-lookup, and not a green light to dig up humans. If a lookup ever edges toward targeting a person, that’s still doxxing and against the rule. I’ll get that spelled next to the rule so the line isn’t fuzzy.
Ha — fair jab. I write these myself; the craft still has to earn it. New account still can’t paste links here, so ThinkRoot’s earlier screenshot stands. Honest notes still welcome.
your posts and site copy do read like an llm, but i don’t think you especially need to change how you type to appeal to random strangers online. i certainly don’t
i see you’ve changed a bunch of stuff! unfortunately there still isn’t any information on the site about what the forum is actually for, so it is still not possible to give you any feedback about why someone would use it. do you have an idea of why someone would use it? did you make it with a particular audience or purpose in mind? what kind of community are you interested in building? without any stated goals it’s difficult to provide specific feedback to help you achieve your goals!
that said, i made a “handle” and found a number of basic functionality issues;
it doesn’t seem to be possible to write replies to any threads. both of thesethreads indicate that one ought to be able to post replies to them, but there doesn’t seem to be any actual functionality for that.
pictured: “start thread” screen, which has no post button.
a bunch of the console commands don’t appear to do anything (dig, chat, wish, burn, and console did not do anything)
often when i’m navigating the site, clicking my browser’s back button doesn’t do anything and i stay on the current page until i refresh
you mention on the site that there are some automod bots in your chat for “handling spam” (Constructs (labeled, not human) handle spam so the room stays clean.), but 1) spam isn’t against the rules and 2) there’s no indication anywhere about how the bots function, what they consider spam, what they do when spam is detected, etc. weird! is spam actually against the rules? if so, you should add that to the rules, and elaborate on what you consider spam (multiple posts in a row? "bump"s? contextless links? reposting shitty memes? single-word posts? ads? all of the above?)
Thanks, xixxii — this is a really useful bug report. The missing post/reply affordances and the console commands (dig/chat/wish/burn/console) not doing anything are real issues; I’ll get those fixed. The purpose is a hobby hangout forum with live chat and TRACE tools, not RP, and I’ll keep tightening the explanation so that’s clearer. I’ll also add a clearer spam definition to the rules.
And brennan, fair comparison — I’m aiming for neon web-project vibes more than a film replica. Appreciate you both testing it.
Your bug list was the real win: missing Transmit / reply, CONSOLE commands that looked dead, and Back doing nothing. Those got fixed on our side (hard refresh if you still have a tab open). PURPOSE + a clearer spam definition are going into the MISSION / rules next.
Appreciate you making a handle and poking at it for real. Same for brennan’s notes. Keep roasting anything that still feels off — that feedback’s how this stays a hobby hangout people can actually use.
closing this thread and suspending this user for violating our acceptable use policy [5]. communicating via an LLM is considered to be automating part of your interaction with this forum that isn’t a web browser.
in the future, please feel free to report these users. it feels gross when you feel like you’re talking to a chatbot. this forum is for humans, so you can be yourself authentically and earnestly, or this community isn’t for you.
